This is not the only original antique to be replaced with fiberglass in the Disney parks. Another great example of this is some of the horses on King Arthur’s Carrousel. A few of them are the original hardwood, but many of them are now fiberglass replicas of the original carousel from 1922. There’s also another prominent fiberglass replica in Frontierland, but that’s a story for another day. 😉 Emile Kuri said of the lampposts, “they were the only lamp post I could find that would match the less than full-scale design of Main Street.” Most cities in America were getting rid of their 160-year-old gas lamps in the 1950s and converting to electric, so it was fortuitous timing for Disneyland to acquire so many working gaslamps cheaply. At 500lbs each and $.08 per pound, each lamp only cost about $40. “Every night maintenance would come in and hose everything down to clean it. Obviously after a while, the lamppost would rest. We replaced those with fiberglass copies, along with all the lamp post in New Orleans Square. Next time you’re around there, give them a knock or two. You’d never know it was fiberglass, unless you heard that distinctive sound.” - Rolly Crump, Imagineer and former supervising art director at Disneyland And yes, I did mess up my voiceover and said gaslighter instead of gas lamplighter… left it in because it made me laugh 😂 #disneyland #disney #disneyparks #mainstreetusa #gaslamps #gaslamp #gaslight #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneyhistory #emilekuri #imagineering #rollycrump #disneylandconstruction #baltimore #philadelphia #stlouis #retrodisney #vintagedisney #disneyfacts #disneytrivia #disneyfan #disnerd #disneynerd #disneyyoutube
