Francis falls ill a few days before the wedding and dies. Arthur is devastated. Francis is buried and later that night, Arthur is too sad to sleep. At around midnight, he smells Francis’s cologne and it makes him unbearably heartbroken, so he gets up out of bed and walks around the house to distract himself. As he’s passing by a mirror, he sees his deceased fiancé. Francis’s spirit is trapped behind the surface of mirrors. Arthur can’t touch him, but he can hear him talk. Francis tells Arthur that everything’s alright and he wants Arthur to move on and continue living his life without him. Arthur tells him he doesn’t want to. Francis insists that he do, and an argument ensues. They squabble for the rest of the night, until it begins to get light outside and Francis tells Arthur he has to leave. Arthur demands that he promise to return the next night, and he does. As the first beams of sunlight enter a window, Francis is gone. Francis returns the night after that, and after that, and after that… until they are living like a normal couple in a household, except for having no physical contact with each other. Arthur fills his house with mirrors so Francis could always be with him. He is constantly tired from staying up night after night with Francis, but he doesn’t mind. After about four years of this, Arthur starts to have a breakdown. He wants to be able to hold Francis like he used to when he was alive. Francis tells him that it can’t be helped and he needs to move on. Francis begins visiting Arthur less and less, which just makes him feel worse. After a year of being an emotional wreck, Arthur suggests that he and Francis should get married like they had planned to, and that it might help him move on. Francis accepts. The wedding seems empty without a pastor or guests. Francis tries to make the occasion happy and fun, but Arthur keeps saying really depressing things and ruining the mood. After Arthur very awkwardly kisses Francis through the mirror, he brings out two glasses of wine and they both have a sip. However, Francis is unaware that Arthur had put poison in his own glass and he drops dead to the floor. Francis is furious with Arthur, but as soon as he sees his husband’s spirit, he is released from the mirrors and embraces Arthur on impulse. For the first time in years, they are both content.
